The Refugee Law Initiative (RLI) has won a Times Higher Education Award for Research Project of the Year: Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. The specific project, "Pushing the Boundaries: New Dynamics of Forced Migration and Transnational Responses in Latin America," set out to analyze "how Latin American states use transnational structures and interventions to address new security and justice challenges resulting from forced migration flows." RLI's director, David Cantor, underscored the "recognition that this award gives to research in the field of refugees and internally displaced persons."

Thematic Focus: Global Compacts Round-up

News:

The 2017 High Commissioner's Dialogue on Protection Challenges has now ended. This year's theme was "Towards a Global Compact on Refugees." Its objective was to serve as a stocktaking exercise: "To assess outcomes of the extensive consultations held with a wide range of actors in the course of 2017" and to "bring together the lessons learned from the application of the [comprehensive refugee response framework (CRRF)] in various contexts, paving the way towards the global compact on refugees."

After the United States withdrew its support for the Global Compact on Migration process, there was speculation it would do the same with the refugee compact. But so far, at least, that has not happened. Fox News' explanation: "The refugee compact remains a Trump administration priority because unlike the migrant issue, it complements Washington’s tough immigration stance. It aims at helping those displaced to stay where they are in host countries or return home, as a State Department spokesperson puts it, 'voluntarily, in safety and with dignity'."

For some thoughts and observations on this year's Dialogue, read the Forced Migration Forum's three-part blog series: Part 1; Part 2; Part 3. See also key NGO messages from ICVA.

Today is the 50th anniversary of the Declaration on Territorial Asylum. Thanks to Klaus Neumann for bringing this to our attention with his recent piece in Inside Story entitled "In the Spirit of International Solidarity." A brief summary reads, "The bid to create a UN convention on territorial asylum might have failed, but it points to possibilities still worth pursuing."
